• Psoriasis is one of the commonest diseases of skin.
• It may occur at any age but usually occurs between the Ages of 10 and 30.
• The patchy lesions consist of sharply defined slightly elevated bright red papules or plaques.
• When the plaques are remove the tips of red papillae are exposed.
• Central clearing and peripheral extension is there.
• In most cases the only disability is cosmetic.
• Irritation is usually mild but may be exaggerated in nervous and anxious individual.
• Psoriasis usually increases in traumatized area.
• Tends to spare those exposed to light.
• It is usually more severe in winter season of the year.
• A single plaque may persist unchanged for many years.

Types of Psoriasis

Guttate Psoriasis
• In guttate Psoriasis a profuse eruption of small papular lesions is present on the trunk and limbs.
• It usually occurs in children and young adult.
Pustular Psoriasis
• It is uncommon and involves the palms and soles.
• Crops of sterile pustuls are succeded by brownish crust.
Intertriginous Psoriasis
• Involves the natal cleft and external genitalia and groins and is often irritable.
Psoriatic Arthritis
• Joint pain with swelling in small and large joints is presented in few cases of Psoriasis.
• Small joint deformity and stiffness of joint makes the life troublesome.
Psoriasis of nails
• It may be followed by skin lesions or may occur alone.
• The nails may become discolored & thickened and fine pitting is there.
Exfoliative Psoriasis
• It is sometimes seen and may occur as the result of chemical based medicines.
• Occasionally there is no obvious cause for the universal spread of disease.
Etiology
• The cause is unknown, it is probable that Psoriasis is a manifestation of inborn defect of epidermis.
Prognosis
• Is difficult but it is unjustifiable to depress the patient with the statement that the disease is incurable.

Details of Psoriasis according to Ayurvedic view:

• Mandal Kushtha is the name given to similarity of symptoms given in Psoriasis.
• Ayurveda considers the theory of vata pitta & kapha with saptadhatus (seven deep body tissue) and trimal (three waste products i.e. urine, stool and sweat) with the three mental humor i.e. Satva, Raja and Tama.
• The Herbal formulas used in this disease regulates the equilibrium of all the three basic humors.

Samprapti (Ayurvedic pathogenesis of Psoriasis)

• The main humor involve is kapha; vata and pitta are involved secondarily.
• The Kapha (unctuous substance in the body obstructs the channels (shorotas) and thereby obstructs the normal functions of vata, pitta & kapha.
• We may say that this disease involves all three basic humors but kapha is the main humor.
• Blood, lymph & skin is toxicated with the effect of kapha, vata & pitta and normal nutrition of the skin is hampered caused by the diseases roughness cracks and scaly formation.

• Vata pitta & kapha are normalised by Ayurvedic medicine and restores the normal luster of skin, and scaly peeling reduces, erythema is relieved with normal function of vata.
